Find Unclaimed Property in Michigan: Free, Easy Search for Residents

If you’ve ever forgotten about an old security deposit, uncashed refund check, or inheritance, the state of Michigan might still be holding your money.

Thanks to an update to the Michigan Unclaimed Property Program, it’s now easier than ever to search for and claim these lost assets.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to check if you have unclaimed property and how to claim it.

What Is Michigan’s Unclaimed Property Program?

The Michigan Department of Treasury manages Michigan’s Unclaimed Property Program. It holds millions of dollars in:

  • Dormant bank accounts

  • Uncashed refund checks

  • Stock certificates

  • Contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes

  • Forgotten utility deposits

By law, businesses and banks must turn over these funds to the state when they can’t locate the rightful owner.

In 2024, Michigan returned over $150 million in unclaimed funds to individuals and heirs. You could be next.
