7 Secret Places to Look for Unclaimed Cash in Florida

With prices rising and jobs under pressure, every dollar counts,  and many Floridians may be sitting on money they didn’t know they had.

The Florida Division of Unclaimed Property says 1 in 5 residents has unclaimed funds from forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, old insurance payouts, or even abandoned safe deposit boxes.

Since 2017, the state has returned $2.7 billion to rightful owners through its official site, FLTreasureHunt.gov.

The average claim is $825, and it’s completely free to search and claim.

How to Search for Unclaimed Money in Florida

You have two free options:

  1. FLTreasureHunt.gov – Search Florida-specific records.

  2. MissingMoney.com – Search multiple states at once.

Tips for searching:

  • Try all versions of your name, including misspellings, nicknames, and initials.

  • If married, search under both current and former last names.

  • Search for relatives, especially those who have passed away (you can claim on their behalf with proper documentation).

Claiming Your Property

  • Submit a claim online with proof of identity (driver’s license, SSN, etc.).

  • The state has up to 90 days to process your request.

  • Claims are always free, never pay a third party to “find” your money.

What Happens If You Don’t Claim It?

  • Funds are eventually moved to the state school fund to support public education.

  • There’s no deadline to claim, you can request your property at any time.

  • Some tangible property may be auctioned off. The next auction is Oct. 10–11 in Orlando.

Other Places to Find Missing Money in Florida

Beyond Florida’s Treasure Hunt, there are several nationwide databases where you might find unclaimed cash or property. All are free to search.

1. Unpaid Wages

2. Retirement Funds

3. Unclaimed Insurance Money

4. Tax Refunds

5. Investments

6. Savings Bonds

7. Individual Indian Money (IIM) Accounts

Bottom line: It’s quick, free, and there’s a 1-in-5 chance you have money waiting. Take five minutes to check, you could have hundreds (or more) with your name on it.
