$2.1 Trillion in Forgotten 401(k)s: How to Find and Claim Your Missing Retirement Money

A surprising amount of retirement savings is sitting unclaimed. Estimates from industry research show that about 31.9 million forgotten 401(k) accounts hold roughly $2.1 trillion.

These funds do not disappear, but they also are not automatically returned. If you lost track of an old account, you may need to take steps to recover it.

Why 401(k) Money Gets Forgotten

It is more common than people think to lose track of retirement savings. This can happen when:

  • You change jobs and forget to roll over your account
  • A company merges, changes its name, or shuts down
  • You lose contact with a former employer
  • You miss notices about your retirement plan

In some cases, balances left behind are not small. Some individuals have unknowingly left $20,000 or more in old workplace accounts.

How to Find Forgotten Retirement Money

The US Department of Labor has introduced new tools to help people reconnect with lost savings.

Retirement Savings Lost and Found Database
This federal tool allows users to search for retirement plans linked to their name through a secure process. While it does not show account balances, it provides contact details for plan administrators so you can follow up.

  • In its first year, over 236,000 users searched the database
  • About 29.5 percent found at least one old plan
  • Currently focused on individuals age 65 and older

Other Ways to Track Down Your Money

If you think you may have a missing 401(k), try these steps:

  • Contact former employers and ask about retirement plans you contributed to
  • Check old emails or paperwork for account details or plan providers
  • Search the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits
  • Look into “default IRAs” created when small balances are automatically rolled over

These methods can take time, but they often lead to real results.
