San Diego County Taxpayers: Over $800K in Unclaimed Funds Waiting—Are You on the List?

Did you know that over $800,000 in unclaimed money is waiting for San Diego County taxpayers?

These funds are owed to individuals who may not even know their entitlement.

If you live in San Diego County, you might be one of them. Here's what you need to know and how to claim your share.

The Source of Unclaimed Funds

Every year, government agencies, including the county, accumulate unclaimed money from various sources such as overpaid taxes, unclaimed refunds, or payments not properly cashed or processed.

When these funds go unclaimed, the county typically holds them until the rightful owner comes forward.

In San Diego County, over $800,000 in unclaimed money is currently sitting in government coffers.

These funds could belong to anyone, from individuals to businesses, who haven't yet claimed what is rightfully theirs.

How to Find Out If You Have Unclaimed Money

San Diego County makes it relatively easy for residents to check if they are owed money. You can search for funds by visiting the county's unclaimed money website or the state’s official site.

Steps to Claim Your Money

If you find your name on the list, claiming your money is straightforward:

  1. Submit a Claim: Download and complete the claim form available on the San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector's website. Be sure to include any required documentation to prove your identity and entitlement.
  2. Provide Identification: You'll need to provide a government-issued ID, proof of your address, and possibly other documents, depending on the nature of the claim.
  3. Wait for Processing: After submitting your claim, it may take a few weeks for processing. Once approved, your funds will be released to you.

Act Now Before It’s Too Late

It’s crucial to act quickly if you discover unclaimed funds.

According to California State Law, any unclaimed money held by the county for three years, or property tax refunds unclaimed for four years, must be transferred to the county’s general fund.

To avoid losing your money, you should file a refund claim before it’s too late.

You have until September 22 to file your claim before the funds are rolled into the general fund. To start the process, you can email your claim to [email protected] or call 1-877-829-4732 for more information.

Treasurer-Tax Collector branch offices are conveniently located at:

  • 590 Third Ave. in Chula Vista
  • 10144 Mission Gorge Road in Santee
  • 141 East Carmel St. in San Marcos

"We want all of this money returned to San Diegans," emphasizes San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister, "So please inform your friends and family to check the unclaimed money list at sdttc.com."
